Keeping children and young people safe is everybody's business ...

Internet safety and bullying

The internet can be fun and useful but it is important that parents understand its dangers too. Social networking sites are some of the most popular sites on the internet, particularly among children and young people, so it is important to find out how to deal with them to ensure your child can enjoy using the sites safely.

Bullying can take place online (known as cyberbullying), by text or in person.

Domestic abuse

If you are worried about a child who you believe is at risk, being ill-treated or neglected, please speak to the Children and Young People's Services Referral, Co-ordination and Investigation Unit on 01275 888 266.

The North Somerset Safeguarding Children Board (NSSCB) website provides a range of information for professionals, parents, children and young people in relation to safeguarding children in North Somerset.  There is information for parents to help to safeguard their children that includes using private tutors and action to take when children go missing.   There is also information for children and young people that includes useful helpline numbers and information about involvement with social care services.

Safety inside and outside the home

Although the majority of parents generally worry about road accidents, most accidents and injuries to children happen in the home.

There is no legal age limit for leaving a child on their own at home, but it is an offence to leave a child alone if it places them at risk.

The risk of children being robbed or attacked on their way home is pretty small, but to keep them safe you should be aware of how they can protect themselves in a threatening situation.

Road safety guides provide ways your child can be independent while staying safe.

Firework safety - watching fireworks is popular and fun, but fireworks are explosives and burn at high temperatures, so they need careful handling and storage.

Lots of useful information leaflets and tips are available on the Avon Fire and Rescue Service website about safety in and out of the home.
